First and foremost, thank you so much to everyone who came out to support the Be Like Bruce Fitness Festival. It was, once again, a huge success with just under $15,000 being raised. All of this money stays right here in Saskatoon to support the fight against cancer. To all of the athletes who competed in both the triathlon and the Crossfit competition, job well done! It was a pleasure to watch and even more fun to be a part of. As I said in the last blog, Bruce would have wanted us to compete fiercely and whole-heartedly but not at the expense of sportsmanship and putting other’s first. Over and over all weekend, you al made Bruce proud. And last, but most certainly not least, to all the people who volunteered their time to make the weekend a success, thank you! Not only were you there and present but you made the event very enjoyable and rewarding for all of the athletes. I hope the same can be said for you and your time!
Now that the weekend is over, what’s next? As an athlete, where do we go from here? It’s totally natural to feel the post-competition “lull” if you will. We were all wound up tight, nerves on edge, anticipating and executed with all we had. Now on the other side, we might not have any clear goals to work towards. I think first, we need to remember our “why”. It’s difficult to train and push yourself each time you are in the gym without your why. Whatever that might be. Keep that clear and present.
Maybe the events over the weekend exposed a new weakness. Great! Let’s get after it so the next time it’s not there. If you would like to set up a goal setting session with your coach, let them know and we would be more than happy to sit down with you and get you on the right track. For all of us who just “didn’t drown” in the pool, congratulations first of all! Second, maybe there’s an area to work on. To any of you triathletes reading this laughing at us, I invite you to come on in to Reebok Crossfit 306 any day of the week and try a free class with us “outside” the pool. The offer is there haha. I think one of the best things about Crossfit, is no matter how good you are at one thing, there is a long list of others that you need to improve on. Identifying what they are is job one.
Mostly I want to encourage everyone! Look how far you have come. Regardless of where you finished on the leaderboard after the weekend, think back about how you would have faired six weeks ago, six months ago, or maybe six years ago. Keep moving forward! Think of what weaknesses you had at that time and how much stronger they are now. Now it’s time to look at new areas to work on, and take the exact same approach with them! It was amazing to watch the competition and the way people pushed it on every part of the weekend. I often tell my athletes that what matters is the effort. That’s what we can control. We can all be proud of that.
See you next year Bruce! We’ll be bigger and badder than ever; and that is exactly how you would want it!
