Balance - Does it exist?

Balance is an unattainable fantasy. I feel like more than ever, we are bombarded with media telling us how important it is to have this illusive daily balance. You know, sleep 8 hours, drink 8 glasses of water, spend quality time with your spouse and children and friends and be sure to get that "self-care" in. Seriously?!?!? You would drive yourself crazy if you tried to attain balance at all times. It will cause you stress and make you feel like you are failing. Here's the truth, you are not failing, it's just that this balance doesn't exist.

Well, my theory is it doesn't exist in a consistent basis, but it does work out over your lifetime. Think about it - when you are a student and you are studying for exams, your life goes out of balance - you forgo other aspects of your life in order to ensure that you can study. When you have a baby, there is no balance. You are doing everything you can to nurture that little life. When you start a new job, or a business, it requires more of you, so you might have to give up some things for your goals. An athlete, when training for a championship or event. They have no balance, they are all in with nutrition, sleep, etc. to reach a goal.

The truth is, balance and the idea of it is fluid. Sometimes different things require more time or energy. It is trying to understand that this balance is achieved over a lifetime of no balance. You invest in your kids so that when they don't require your attention 24/7, you have a beautiful relationship. You work hard at building a business or your career so that you can set yourself up financially and retire comfortably someday. You spend tons of time with friends when you are single and in your youth so that when you need them (even though you haven't seen them in ages), you can call them because you had put in the work.

Don't get me wrong, I think you still need to exercise daily and eat and sleep well, but it just might not look picture perfect at all times, and that is okay. It's your efforts over time that add up to big results.
