Two years ago Crossfit 306 set out with a clear goal; to train teens in an “academy” setting in order to compete on the national and international Crossfit and weightlifting stages.  We called it “306 Training Grounds”.  In year one the program saw some amazing results with multiple athletes narrowly missing the Crossfit Games and putting up numbers in weightlifting that were competitive across the country.  In it’s second year, 306 Training Grounds added a few new members and surpassed the notable accomplishments set in the first year.

Members of 306 Training Grounds need to have a lifestyle that affords them the time to train with the commitment that is expected from them.  This means doing FlexEd, homeschool or arranging classes so they can be at 306 all afternoon, four days a week.  While this is new to the Crossfit space (as far as we can dig up, we are the only program in Canada like it), it is something familiar within other sports.  Many of our athletes have backgrounds and saw success in dance, gymnastics, and hockey.  Athletes in those disciplines strive to excel just same as our teens in 306 Training Grounds.

Here’s a list of what happened in year two:

Jacob McCarthy - competed at a Crossfit sanctioned semi-final event at the Atlas Games in the teen division narrowly missing the podium and taking an event win.

Tommy McCarthy - competed in two lifting meets at only 11 years old and put up a personal best 55kg (121 pound) clean and jerk.

Bella Thompson-Hill - competed at the Canadian Junior Weightlifting Nationals Championships were she won gold setting and set new provincial records.

Brynn Delainey - Competing in only her second Crossfit Open, finished 21th overall in the world. She also finished 3rd in the teen division at the Atlas Games

Trenna Gessell - at the age of 12, was too young to enter in the Crossfit Open but was allowed to compete in the Atlas Games teen division based on her current abilities that far exceed her age. She finished 5th, beating out many girls five or six years older than her.

Kenzie Pavelich - also competing in her second ever Open, finished 71st overall in the World!  She also finished second at Atlas Games showing incredible consistency throughou.t

How’s that for a list of success?  Jason and I are incredibly proud of the young people we get to work with in our program.  Our goal, as we set out, was to produce athletes who are competitive not only on the national level, but also on the international stage.  These teens have exceeded those expectations and we are thrilled with the future potential they all have; not only athletically, but as future leaders in our community and within their own world!

Want to know more about 306 Training Grounds? Feel free to reach out to Jason or myself or stop in any afternoon during the school year to see them in action!
