Recap from Power Lifting Westerns

Saskatchewan played host to the Western Canadian Powerlifting Championship this past weekend with a number of 306 athletes competing.

On the men’s side we had Clint Senko who had a great meet hitting 8 out of 9 lifts and breaking into the 400’s on his wilks score.  Cam Jones clinched a national qualifying total of 605 kg with a massive 260 kg deadlift.  We will be seeing him on the National’s platform in Regina this February.  Dre Grasdal started training at 306 following provincials in September and his results show just what great powerlifting coaching can do.  He finished with a 675 kg total (a 47kg (!) improvement since September) qualifying him for nationals as well.  Last, we had powerlifting coach – Dr. Marc Morris!  Not only did Marc successfully defend his PhD this week he hit a 250 kg deadlift that he has been chasing for some time.

On the women’s side, Gwen Grasdal was squatting like a pro after training to improve her depth.  The work paid off finishing with a 325kg total.  Coach Amy Smith had a tough day but still managed to do what she does best – squat - re-breaking her national record (150.5kg). We finished with the Last Chance Open Competition where Lindy Grasdal pulled 147.5 kg to finish off the evening.

Special thank you to Jessie Buydens and Kent Brown for coaching lifters.  Kent provided so much motivation he was even cheering lifters on as they warmed up.  Lastly – thanks to Coach Marc for sharing his love for powerlifting with 306 athletes and guiding everyone through weeks of training and competition day.
