The day started out with a brisk wind and light drizzle but none of the athletes would let the elements stand in their way as they would race the opening mile followed by sixteen thrusters in record pace.
After the opening WOD, Podium or Bust the early favourites had taken control with a first place victory in the scaled division. Team Reebok as expected would win the first WOD in the Rx category but only a mere few seconds in front of team Towel Boy from CF Brio.
After three WODs within 4 hours the standings became clearer, or so we thought… In the RX, Man Made had climb back up to tie Team Reebok for first. In the intermediate, Heroes for Hire stood in front, and Podium or Bust had lost some ground to both Team Gordon from 306 and You and Me and Brie out of Sask Pro.
WOD four would only affect the standings slightly and set the stage for the all-important quarterfinals. Eight teams in each division would make it to the quarters and only the top four would make it to the semi-finals.
The quarterfinals featured the always exciting and spectator friendly 1 Rep Max attempt, this year the lift would be the clean and jerk for all divisions. The scaled division offered exciting heartfelt moments including the head to head match up of Rosie and her 14-year-old daughter Tori. 53-year-old Chris Gordon would hit a personal best on her clean and jerk, to her teams and coaches’ delight. The female athlete on You, Me, and Brie put up an impressive 195lbs! In the intermediate division Chad Brooks out of Lloydminster put on a clinic clean and jerking 315lbs with ease and then cleaning 365lbs and just missed the jerk. However Heroes for Hire would still position themselves as the team to beat going into the semis. In the RX all teams would be within a few pounds of each other. Jason Trinh out of Strong Fit YXE put together a gutsy 300lbs clean and jerk at a body weight of only 170lbs.
The semi-finals featured head to head action with the losing team being knocked out and the winner advancing. The scaled division featured two upsets with Rowing Pains beating out the top seeded team and Team Gordon knocking out the second place team Podium or Bust. Rowing Pains would continue their come from behind victory by winning the finals and claiming top prize.
In the intermediate division Gas City CF a legitimate contender all day long would beat out North Battleford with local team Heroes for Hire easily winning their semi-finals. Heroes for Hire would continue their dominant performance winning over Gas City in the finals. In the RX division CF Regina would beat out Strong Fit YXE while Team Reebok would win over Man Made and would also control the finals taking the early lead and never looking back.
