If you are reading this, there is a pretty good chance you are a person who does CrossFit. If you are person who does Crossfit on a regular basis, you are more fit than the average person.
Within our Crossfit culture we are exposed to some of the fittest people in the world. Whether it be other athletes in our gym, the athletes we follow on social media or even just the athletes we hear talked about. We see and hear all of these amazingly fit individuals doing incredible feats of fitness and it is easy to think “I’m not even close...”
“These people” we see and hear about are the very tip of the spear. The top one percent of people in the entire world! Are they amazing athletes? Absolutely. Are they insanely fit? You bet. But that doesn’t mean we should expect to be there. Because we have this exposure to athletes on that level, it’s easy to become discouraged with where we are at. I talked about in the last “competition prep” blog about “doing you”.
Take note of those around you in the rest of the world; outside the Crossfit gym. Look outside the bubble of “Crossfit”. Chances are you stack up very well physically against almost everyone in the rest of the world. Be proud of this! Be proud of where you are physically. Being active and involved in Crossfit prepares you for the day to day and to be functional late into life. Not only that, but you are far more physically capable than most people you see around you.
The beauty of Crossfit is there are always going to be things that someone else is better at than you. This drives us to be better ourselves. This keeps us humble. We practise the ten physical principles daily in our workouts. You may have not even heard them before; but they are there every day.
- Cardiovascular / Respiratory Endurance
- Stamina
- Strength
- Flexibility
- Power
- Speed
- Coordination
- Agility
- Balance
- Accuracy
These ten principles practised in the gym, make us far more capable outside of it.
Take pride in your fitness and your abilities. There will always be things to work on; that’s part of the fun. If you are in the gym on a regular basis, you are making progress. Stay the course.
“Forging Elite Fitness” does not just mean those top one percent. You are right there in that slogan.
