Community Competing

I am sore!  Specifically my quads.  Despite that, it was a great weekend.  I had the pleasure of competing this weekend at the second annual Strongfit Rumble at Archibald arena on Saturday. The day was a blast!

Our gym had five teams competing at the event.  I spent some time talking with everyone after and the answer was the same across the board. A great event and a great day celebrating fitness!  Thanks to all the 306 people who came out. Not just the ten of us who were out on the competition floor but all the members of the community who came out to cheer us on.  The support and encouragement means a whole lot!

I would like to give a special, extra big thanks to Jason and the crew from Strongfit for hosting us. It’s clear from the event that you have something good going on in your community.  There is a ton of work that goes in to any event; let alone an event off-site.  To all the people who helped set up and take down and make everything “work”, thank you!  To all the judges and logistics people keeping us unruly competitors organized all day long, thank you!  From a competitors stand point, it all went off without a hitch, was well organized, well programmed and well thought out. I appreciate all the efforts and work.

Talking with Jay Cain after the event, I was expressing to him how much I enjoyed the event. Competing is something I love to do.  I usually end up getting my butt handed to me and finding all kinds of areas I need to work on. Which is great (in that weird “Crossfit” kind of way ha)!  This event was no different in that regard. However, just like the events at 306, the Rumble had a very real “community” feel to it.  At 306, our motto of “Community Above All Else” is boldly and proudly painted front and center above the whiteboard at the gym.  We take pride in that fact. It was clear to me that Jason and the team at StrongFit also strive to have that feel.

It makes an event very enjoyable when the focus is shifted away from athlete “performance” and onto athlete “enjoyment”.  Don’t get me wrong, as an Rx athlete, there is 100% a time and place for competition mode and performance. Believe it or not, your local competition where once the dust settles, everyone has a beverage to two and goes on there way isn’t it.  Everyone went out on the competition floor and gave it there all. That’s why we all love Crossfit and the thrill of competing.  The focus however, and what I saw first hand, was everyone enjoying the day.

Regardless of where you are at in your fitness journey, I would encourage you to sign up for a competition if you feel the “itch”.  Don’t worry about not being able to do a single pull up. That’s what bands are for. Don’t worry where you are going to finish or how long an event might take you. Do it for the enjoyment of it!  Get a little bit uncomfortable and you will be surprised just how far you are able to push yourself. Our very own 3 on 3 is just around the corner and we still have spots available. Grab yourself a team of two males and one female and sign up. There is nothing to lose and a whole lot of smiles, laughs and enjoyment to be had and memories to be made.

To the StrongFit crew, once again, thank you for having us!  To anyone reading this who isn’t signed up for the 3 on 3, what are you waiting for!

PS- I’d like to also say a big thank you to @nicolehills_photography for capturing all the usual great “action” shots, but also the special moments that make our sport and this community exactly what it is!
