Do I need a sugar detox diet? I don't think so - most often when you go from zero to hero with anything, it doesn't end well. You just need to make a decision to cut back slowly and before long, your taste buds will adjust and you won't crave the sugar anymore.
How do you do this? Well, if you usually put 2 spoons of sugar in your coffee, cut back to 1, then 1/2 and then no sugar in your coffee. After a while, you can try coffee the way you used to drink it and believe me, you will hate it and won't believe how sweet it is.
When you are wanting something sweet - opt for fruit instead of candy or baked goods. Over time, you will really taste the sweetness in your fruit. When I was training for my figure competition, I had a ridiculous diet. I didn't have fruit for 3 months and I even cut out carrots and peppers near the end because they were higher in sugar. When I had my first bite of an apple, it felt like the most sweet and amazing thing I had ever had. My taste buds had adjusted so much to having no sugar, that I became very sensitive to it. This is just an example of how our bodies can adjust.
Cutting sugar is not an easy thing to do - remember that reward that your brain feels after getting a "hit" of chocolate? You have to make a choice and it will take planning and thought in the beginning. The good news is that before long, you will adjust and your old "sugar habit" will be a thing of the past. When you aren't constantly dealing with insulin spikes, you will find that you have better concentration, energy levels and even better sleep.
Baby steps, one small action at a time will give you big results.
