Sugar High

Why do I get a sugar high? So, we know that we do get addicted to sugar, but do you know why that little mini chocolate bar gives you such a nice pick me up (and then crash)? The sugar, or a simple carbohydrate is quickly turned into glucose in your bloodstream - and your blood sugar levels spike.

I often get asked about fruit, because there's lots of sugar in fruit, right? Yes, there is sugar in fruit, some more than others, but there is a huge difference between grabbing an apple or a kit kit bar. The apple hits your system differently, so it doesn't cause a fast spike in your blood sugar levels.

This is because it has water and fiber that slow the digestion process. Soda, syrup and candy are NOT the same. Please remember this, especially if you are following a macro based eating plan. Calories are NOT created equal.

Try to stick to whole foods no matter what you are craving. Do you want a sweet treat? Go for berries or fruit. I like to eat frozen mangos for a dessert or when I want to have something sweet. Frozen grapes are another one that really satisfy the sweet craving. Try swapping your afternoon cookie or donut for a fruit of your choice. Try it and take note of how your body feels and your energy levels.
