The fifth instalment of our annual 3 on 3 Throwdown was another resounding success. The event was blessed with what will possibly be the last warm day of the Fall season. With the sun keeping the athletes warm, cool heads would be needed to tackle the WODs. This year's program was the most challenging that we have put forth. In the end, the most well rounded teams found their way on top of the podium.
In the scaled division, Josh and Jamie Herman and their captain Laurie Thomson were consistent throughout the day and beat out team KBS of Kaley Pugh, Byron Pugh, and Shawn Kucik in the finals. KBS earned their way into the finals by upsetting the number one team Blood Sweat and Cheers in the semi-finals.
The intermediate division was dominated by Team 525 consisting of T.J., Ryan MacEwen and Lisa Rachinski. Team 525 were the only team to complete WOD #1 within the time cap in that division and continued their dominance throughout the day. WBS of Wayne Dust, Brad Merkosky, and Sam Samantha Mitchell put up a valiant effort in the finals and made a case for being the definite second best team in this division.
The RX was fiercely contested, team Meat Sticks (Steven Lund, Ben Benjamin Nicholson, Hannah) won the opening WOD but then struggled with the next few WODS. Ulitmately they claimed a spot in the semis but were dispatched by the top team of Team Reebok lead by 4 time finalist and back to back champion Aaron Parker. The other semi-finalist featured a strong Synergy Strength team of Lecina, Matt Bathgate, and Tyler Mathew Siwak. They went head to head with Strong Fit in the semis and earned a chance to compete in the winner take all finals.
The" Be Like Bruce " final named after one of our pillars of our community, Bruce Gordon, passed away on Friday created an emotional filled response from the crowd and the athletes. The RX finals proved to be some of the most exciting CrossFit that I've ever experienced. Synergy took the early lead and look to win this year's title. However their female competitor would struggle on the final 9 reps of heavy 1 arm DB snatch opening the door for a come from behind victory for Team Reebok. Kelsey Rhode went to the proverbial dark place to finish the WOD and claim her second 3 on 3 Title in back to back years.
To all our volunteers, competitors, and spectators a huge thank you for making this day possible.
To our sponsors, Reebok Canada, Rowan Minnion at Blonyx, Josh MacGowan at Herc's and Paul Vaas at Kota Graphics, thank you so much for your support.
