Today after a class at the gym I had a conversation with a member who kind of laughed off the comment of “I heard 306 was the ‘competitive’ gym”. I want to take a quick second and address that comment and answer the question of:
Is 306 a competitive gym?
In one word; yes. 306 is a competitive gym but not in the way you may think.
At 306, we pride ourselves on competing with each other and ourselves daily. We pride ourselves on competition and being competitive in every class of every day. In any given noon hour class I see some of our elite sanctional level athletes competing against one of our new grade school members. I see a mom of three kids competing against them. I see a Grandmother working out and doing the exact same workout, adjusted for her, as the top athlete in our facility. They are all competing against each other. What else I see in all of this competition are smiles and results!
Competing isn’t bad, none of these people feel any animosity to the people they are competing against. They aren’t there to beat them. They aren’t there to make anyone feel “less than”. They are there competing because it encourages others. It adds an element of fun to the suffering that goes along with getting uncomfortable in our training. It’s the satisfaction of knowing that other people are hurting just as much as you are. That competition helps to fuel the fire when you feel like quitting. I have seen it first hand when one of our sanctional level athletes takes the time to acknowledge a young teenagers efforts and the pride that puts on the child’s face. I have seen a teenage daughter beaming with excitement because she put up a better score than her mom. I have also seen the mom snicker when she beats her daughter. All that competition brings a whole lot of happiness and helps build our amazing community.
The other thing I have seen out “competition” bring to our gym is results. It’s no secret we have a pool of some of the top athletes in the city within our walls. They have come here by choice because they have seen the results that our community and training atmosphere yields. We have also helped members lose hundreds of pounds and hundreds of inches off their bodies over the years. We have seen our community support and uplift families going through unimaginable loss. We have help raised funds and awareness to support members of the greater community in need. Those are the results we are most proud of. Those are the results of our gym; results that would not be possible without the competitiveness and drive of our members.
So is 306 a “competitive gym”? You better believe it. Want to be a part of this competitive atmosphere that results in an amazing community with members of all levels of fitness supporting, encouraging, pushing and building each other up while achieving some of the most amazing results around? Come on in. Compete!
