This past Saturday we had 7 athletes compete in the Moustache Open hosted by CrossFit Brio. This was the first meet of the new weightlifting season and first national qualifier of the season. We started off the day with 2 ladies who have been fully committed to the OLY programming that we provide at 306, Kaley Pugh and Chelsea Andrews.
This was Chelsea’s first competition; she started the day off with an EASY 45kg snatch opener, moving up to 50kg for her second attempt and also making it with ease. On her third lift we went for a PR by 1 kilo at 56kg; she just missed it forward. Next up was the clean and jerk for her, starting at 50kg, moving up to 60, and then attempting a PR tie at 70kg. Chels finished the day with a 110kg total and going 4/6 on her lifts, claiming the silver medal in the 63kg weight class, not bad for her first competition!
Kaley was up next, being skeptical about her shoulder during warm up for the snatch Kaley came out on the platform a little nervous. Having her first 2 attempts overhead but just missing 50kg. On her 3rd and final attempt Kaley made 50kg for a new competition PR and a new Provinicial Master's record. Kaley was looking for redemption on the clean and jerk; nailing her opening attempt at 60kg, we decided to go up 3 kilos. On her second attempt Kaley missed the jerk. Having 2 minutes to complete the lift again she hit 63kg and again establishing a new competition PR and again posting a new provincial record in the C and J and the total. Kaley finished the day 3/6 with a 113 total and finishing first in the 75kg weight class, great job Kaley!
Nick Korchinski and I were up next, lifting in the 77kg class and 62kg class respectively. Nick along with Chelsea was also in his first competition. Inspired by our boy Jon North, Nick opened up his snatches with 70kg on the bar making it with ease. For Nick’s next lift he went up to 76kg making it look as easy as his last lift. Nick went for a PR lift at 81kg on his third attempt just losing it forward. For the clean and jerk Nick would hit 80kg for an easy opener and then 85kg for his second attempt, making it look better then his first. Nick would try for a PR at 91kg but missed the jerk. He takes home a silver medal in his first competition, with a 161kg total.
I would open the day at 83kg hitting my first attempt and having it count as my only lift, missing my second attempt falling back and just missed it forward on my third attempt. I would open my clean and jerk at 108kg making it pretty easily. I would try to better the provincial record by 1kg and moving up to 111kg but I missed it on my second attempt. On my third attempt we made a bold move by going up to 115kg so I would be able to get the total record as well. I made the lift and was able to qualify for nationals with a 198 total.
Jason who cut 6 pounds in the morning prior to weigh in would compete in the 77kg weight class. Jason’s opening snatch would be at 105kg; making it look like a cake walk he would go up to 110 for his second attempt. Also making it look like a walk in the park. For Jason’s third attempt we would call for 113kg which is a PR tie; with one of the most impressive saves to date Jason would tie his PR and further advancing his provinicial master's record. On the clean and jerk Jason opened at 135kg, on the first attempt he missed the clean throwing the bar so hard he fell back. On his second attempt Jason would be called on a slight press out. Finally on his third attempt at 135kg he would make it; qualifying him for this years nationals. Jason finshed with a 248kg total.
The big boys would be up last for 306. Jason Joyal and Mike Rogers were ready to lift big. Mike, competing in his first weightlifting competition would open up his snatch at 90kg making the attempt and going up to 95kg and hitting that as well. He then attempted 98kg but missed the lift. On the clean and jerk Mike would open with 110, hitting his opener and moving on to 115kg. Mike would make the lift but was called on a press out. Attempting 115 again for his final attempt Mike would miss the lift. He finished with a 205 total in a very competitive 94kg class.
Jason Joyal enjoyed a banner day! He would open the day up with a 90kg snatch, feeling good Jay would go up to 95kg and make the lift as well. Feeling even better Jay went for a PR at 103kg and a board worthy lift at 306! On the clean and jerk Jay opened up at 115kg making it with ease. Moving on to 125kg it would be the final lift Jay made. He would end up with a 228 total a huge competition PR. Great work Jay!
Thanks to everyone who came out and supported us throughout the day! See you in the lifting room team!
