It's that time of year again...when those 5 weeks creep up on us and we get nervous butterflies and try and figure out what crazy workouts Dave Castro will put us through this year. Yes, it is the beginning of the Crossfit Games competitive season - the Open. Being a part of Crossfit over the years, it has been fun to see how far the sport has come. In 2009, after following WODs on crossfit.com, the girls and I went to cheer Jason on is this competition. He registered, paid his money and got to compete. That competition is what today is referred to as Regionals. It wasn't that long ago but the sport has grown from moderate weight and skill levels to a professional sport. In order to qualify to Regionals, it is going to be a fight and the Games, well those are the Olympics. The athletes that are competing in California are of a special breed. All of them have played and competed in sport throughout their lives and although they might be new to this sport, they are long time elite athletes.
So, with all the extra competition, why do the Open? The Open is a fun way to come together as a Crossfit community world wide and be a part of this huge event. Sure, you can compare yourself to the rest of the field but more than anything it is an opportunity to compete against yourself. There is something about the open that makes you push a little harder, dig a little deeper for that extra rep. The energy is incredible and it's a competition that you can do in the comfort of your own box. There are 2 divisions this year and that will make the open even more inclusive than before.
We will be scheduling the WODs for Fridays and Saturdays as they will be released on Thursday evenings. If you want to compete, awesome - we will support you in your efforts. If competing isn't for you - no worries at all. You can still come in and work out and we will scale your workout to wherever you need to be. You can still be a part of the fun, cheering on fellow athletes.
On a final note, remember it is just a WOD. It doesn't define you as a person. Don't let it get to you - it's supposed to be fun, so have fun with it. Once it's done, move on and continue with your training. Let's support each other and enjoy the coming weeks. And, when it's all done - we will celebrate:). To register, go to games.crossfit.com and click register for the open. Be sure to join our affiliate and our team. If you have any questions at all, please feel free to ask Jason or myself. Let's do this 306!
