If you are a new face to the Crossfit world, you may have heard some buzz lately about “The Open”. If you have done The Open in years past, you might be asking “why do it again?” or “what has changed?”
“The Open Is for Anyone
The 2019 Reebok CrossFit Games Open is the largest fitness competition on Earth and an exciting showcase of the CrossFit community. Here, athletes like you, from all around the world, show up and push themselves further than they ever thought possible over a five-week period. Challenges, PRs and the unknown await. Are you ready? “
-Crossfit
For way less than one percent of Crossfit, the Open is the first chance of the season to earn your spot to the Games. For every body else (over 400,000 people worldwide signed up in 2018) its an opportunity to test yourself against whomever or whatever you want to stack up against. Starting February 21, Crossfit will release an “Open Workout” every Thursday for five weeks (or so it has been in years past). You have four days to complete the workout and once registered, enter your score online. Easy as that.
On the simplest level, The Open is an opportunity to push yourself that little bit extra on a given day to see what you can accomplish. You come in to the gym day in and day out and here is the chance to push your limits on fitness. Once registered, your results are stored in an online leaderboard. You can filter it down through a number of different options to see where you are placed in your country, province, age group, Rx or scaled and even by some occupations. We most certainly do not need to be that “elite” athlete to enjoy and benefit from signing up for the Open.
As a part of the community at 306, you will benefit from having your peers there with you for each Open workout. Each week, Crossfit will throw a new workout at us. Just like every single day you come in the gym, there are different options for scaling available for that workout. Come in, do the wod, enter your score and move on. At the end of the 5 weeks, you will have a snap shot of your fitness. You are able to look back on years past and track improvement.
I would encourage everyone, regardless of where you are at on your fitness journey, to sign up. It’s a ton of fun. You’re going to the workouts anyways (they will be programmed into the week). It’s great for the community. It’s a very good chance to push yourself and show off that next level of fitness you have been working so hard to make happen!
