5 Second Rule

If you have followed me for a while, you know that I love to read and listen to books while I am on the road. I just finished "The 5 Second Rule" by Mel Robbins. It was a good reminder and such great advice. If you haven't read it, the idea is that when you have an idea to act on it within 5 seconds before your brain shuts it down. To be clear, this is not for huge, life changing decision - no, those still require careful thought. This rule is great to be used for daily decisions and they may just end up changing your life.

For example, if you are in a meeting at work and you have an idea, but there is a room full of executives and you don't want to embarrass yourself, so you stay quiet. It was probably a dumb idea anyway, right? OR, when you have your thought, count down 5-4-3-2-1 and say it. Seriously, what is the worst that can happen? They might not like it? But what if they love it? What if it gives you the opportunity to head up a new project that you are really passionate about? What if it opens more doors for you? At the very least, it will help to build your confidence.

Here's the truth and one that we have talked about a TON at the gym. It's the idea of waiting to feel motivated. If you wait until you "feel" like it, you will likely never train or go for that run or clean your house for that matter. The truth is, you just have to do it. I have never had a lot of time in my day to train. That seems funny considering that I own a gym. The truth is, between work, coaching, running a business and having 3 busy kids to run around - there isn't much time. So, I pick the hour that I have in my schedule and I just get it done. I might be tired, or haven't eaten yet, I might not feel like it, but I just put on my gear and start. I know that I will be so mad if I miss it and I need it in my day, so I don't think, I just do.

What are some things that hold you back? Could you use this 5-4-3-2-1 rule to help you? Give it a try and see what happens.
